The Benefits of Essential Oil Blends for Wellness and Daily Ritual

I've been working with essential oils since I was in my twenties, and in the ten years since founding Nudi Point from my workshop in Takahue, Far North New Zealand, I've seen first hand how transformative they can be when used consistently and well.

But I also know how confusing it can be when you're starting out. What's the difference between a single essential oil and a blend? What do blends actually do? And how do you use them properly?

Let me break it down.

What are essential oil blends?

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts, obtained through steam distillation or cold pressing, that contain the active aromatic and therapeutic compounds of the source plant. Lavender, for example, is extracted from lavender flowers. Peppermint from peppermint leaves. Rosemary from rosemary sprigs.

A blend combines multiple essential oils in specific ratios, chosen because they work synergistically - meaning the combination is more effective than any single oil alone. A relaxation blend might combine lavender (calming), frankincense (grounding) and chamomile (soothing). An energising blend might combine peppermint (stimulating), lemon (uplifting) and rosemary (clarifying).

The art of blending is something I find genuinely fascinating. It's both a science and a creative practice.

What does the research say?

The essential oil and aromatherapy market is projected to grow to nearly $20 billion globally by 2029 - not because of clever marketing, but because the evidence for their benefits is growing. Here's what research supports:

  • Lavender essential oil has been shown in clinical studies to reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality.

  • Blended essential oils combining lavender, clary sage and marjoram have been shown in clinical research to improve sleep patterns and quality of life in working adults.

  • Bergamot and ylang-ylang blends have shown potential in alleviating symptoms of anxiety and supporting emotional balance.

  • Peppermint oil has strong evidence for mental alertness and focus when inhaled.

This aligns with centuries of traditional use across Egyptian, Chinese and Indian cultures - and it's why aromatherapy is increasingly being integrated into spas, wellness centres and healthcare settings worldwide.

How to use essential oil blends

There are three main ways to use essential oil blends: diffusion, topical application and inhalation.

Diffusion is the most popular method. An oil diffuser disperses the essential oils as a fine mist into the air, filling a room with fragrance and creating the therapeutic atmosphere you're after. I use a diffuser in my workshop every day - it's one of the simplest ways to shift the mood of a space instantly.

Topical application means applying the blend directly to the skin, always diluted in a carrier oil. Never apply undiluted essential oils to skin. Our essential oil roll-on blends are pre-diluted and ready to use - perfect for pulse points, temples or the back of the neck.

Inhalation can be as simple as adding a few drops to your palms, rubbing them together and breathing deeply. It's the fastest way to experience the effect of an oil.
