Dehydrated skin is one of the things I hear most about from Nudi Point customers. And it makes sense - our skin is under constant stress from the environment, the weather, the products we use and just the general pace of life.

The good news is that some of the most effective hydrating ingredients on earth are completely natural. The bad news is that a lot of skincare marketing muddles the difference between genuinely hydrating ingredients and ones that just temporarily make skin feel smooth.

Let me share what I've learned over the past decade of formulating from our workshop in Takahue, Far North New Zealand.

Understand the difference: moisturising vs hydrating

These two words get used interchangeably but they mean different things. Hydration refers to water content in the skin. Moisturising refers to locking that water in and protecting the skin's barrier. You often need both.

Genuinely dehydrated skin needs ingredients that draw water to the skin and ingredients that seal it in. Natural skincare can do both - often more gently and sustainably than conventional alternatives.

Natural ingredients that genuinely work

Rosehip oil is rich in essential fatty acids - particularly omega-3 and omega-6 - which help restore the skin's moisture barrier. It also contains natural vitamin A (a retinol precursor) which supports healthy cell turnover, and powerful antioxidants that protect against environmental damage. Our 100% Pure Certified Organic Rosehip Oil is one of our most versatile products - customers use it on their face, their hair, anywhere that feels dry.

Argan oil is exceptionally rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids. It's non-comedogenic, meaning it won't block pores, which makes it ideal for people who have dry skin but are also prone to breakouts. It creates a light, protective layer that seals moisture into the skin without feeling heavy.

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that supports the skin's collagen production, protects against environmental damage and - importantly for hydration - helps the skin retain moisture more effectively over time. Our Facially Yours Vitamin C Facial Serum combines vitamin C with botanical oils specifically chosen for their hydrating and skin-supporting properties. It's our most awarded product and the one I'm most proud of.

Shea butter is extraordinary for intense hydration. Rich in fatty acids and vitamins A and E, it creates a protective barrier on the skin that prevents water loss. It's a key ingredient in our Whipped Body Butters for exactly this reason - these are our go-to recommendation for anyone dealing with dry or dehydrated skin on the body.

Essential oils - particularly lavender, frankincense and chamomile - contain anti-inflammatory compounds that calm irritation in dry, stressed skin, allowing the skin to hold moisture more effectively.

The most effective routine for dehydrated skin

Based on what I've seen work for thousands of customers, here's what I'd recommend:

  • Cleanse gently, never with anything that strips the skin.

  • Apply a facial serum or oil while skin is still slightly damp - this helps trap moisture.

  • Follow with a richer moisturiser or body butter to seal everything in.

  • Apply morning and evening consistently - hydration is cumulative, not instant.

Our Dehydrated and Dry Skin page has a deeper breakdown of which products suit different skin types if you want to explore further.

One honest note

Natural oils and plant-based ingredients work - but they work gradually and consistently. If you're used to conventional skincare that delivers instant results through silicones and synthetic moisturisers, the first few weeks of switching can feel like nothing is happening. Give it a month. Your skin is learning to support itself again rather than relying on artificial help.

It's worth it. I promise.
