Natural vs Conventional Skincare - What's Actually the Difference?

I'm Blair, the founder of Nudi Point, and I want to be upfront with you: I'm biased. I've spent the better part of my adult life making 100% natural skincare from a converted carport in Takahue, Far North New Zealand. But my bias didn't come from nowhere - it came from lived experience. And I think that's worth sharing.
Where my story started
As a teenager, I had severe skin problems. I tried everything the pharmacy shelves had to offer - medicated washes, prescription creams, product after product packed with chemicals I couldn't pronounce. Most of them made things worse. My skin became red, irritated and flaky on top of everything else.
It wasn't until I discovered naturopathy and aromatherapy that things changed. Using botanical ingredients and essential oils, my skin slowly improved - and more importantly, I started to feel like myself again. You can read the full story at nudipoint.co.nz/our-story.
That experience made me a believer. But what does the evidence actually say?
What conventional skincare contains
Conventional skincare products often rely on synthetic preservatives, artificial fragrances, petroleum derivatives, sulphates and parabens to create shelf-stable, fast-acting formulas. These ingredients aren't all inherently dangerous - but for many people, particularly those with sensitive skin, they can cause irritation, disrupt the skin's natural microbiome and strip away the oils your skin actually needs.
Research published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2025 found that conventional skincare products containing synthetic chemicals can potentially irritate the skin and accelerate ageing in susceptible individuals - driving a significant global shift toward natural and plant-based alternatives.
What natural skincare contains
Natural skincare uses ingredients derived from plants, minerals and botanical oils. Things like rosehip oil, argan oil, shea butter, vitamin C from natural sources, essential oils and plant extracts. These ingredients contain antioxidants, essential fatty acids, vitamins and phytonutrients that work with your skin's biology rather than against it.
A systematic review of 70 studies published in 2025 found that essential oils - the cornerstone of our natural skincare range - showed comparable or superior efficacy to conventional treatments for conditions including acne and topical skin infections, with a lower incidence of adverse side effects.
That doesn't mean every natural product is perfect for every person. Skin is individual and some people can react to natural ingredients too. But the fundamental difference is this: natural ingredients tend to nourish and support the skin, while many synthetic ingredients suppress symptoms without addressing the underlying cause.
The "natural" label problem
Here's something I wish more brands talked about honestly: "natural" is not a regulated term in New Zealand or most countries. A product can legally call itself natural while still containing synthetic preservatives or artificial fragrances.
At Nudi Point, when I say 100% natural, I mean it. Every product we make in our small workshop in Takahue contains only ingredients derived from nature - nothing synthetic, nothing hidden. You can explore every ingredient we use and why we use it on our Ingredients page. We believe you deserve to know exactly what you're putting on your skin.
Where to start if you're making the switch
If you're thinking about moving away from conventional skincare, I'd suggest starting with your most-used daily product. For most people that's a facial serum or moisturiser. Our award-winning Facially Yours Vitamin C Facial Serum is a great starting point - it's our most loved product and works beautifully on sensitive, oily and combination skin alike.
For your body, our Whipped Body Butters replace conventional moisturisers with a blend of shea butter, mango butter, botanical oils and essential oils. And for hair, our natural hair treatments were actually the very first products I created - proof that natural ingredients can perform just as well as anything else on the shelf.
The switch doesn't have to happen overnight. But once you start, I don't think you'll look back.
